The Women's Study, Two Rooms a Week

A daytime group and an evening group, named books, named leaders, a conference room on Thursdays: the archive's record of the women's Bible study across four captured years.

A small classroom with a folding table, a stack of English-learning workbooks, a whiteboard wiped mostly clean, plastic chairs, a window with blinds, fluorescent light, no readable text on any surface, no people, documentary photograph
A different weekly booking for the same kind of room: workbooks swapped for a study guide, the chairs the same shape.

The literature table keeps the same discipline: a named book, a named leader, a room booked on the same day every week. Reston Presbyterian ran its women's ministry as two parallel studies, a daytime group and an evening group, and the women.htm page named both, captured five times between 2006 and 2011.

The stated protocol

The daytime study met in the RPC conference room, Thursdays at 10am, with child care provided so the format did not depend on a childless hour. Its book was "Her Name is Woman," a six-week study of New Testament women by Gien Karssen (the page spells it "Glen"), and its contact was given by name, Julie Dages, with a phone number. The 2006 capture records that the daytime group had just completed that six-week study; by May 2008 the page says there is no daytime study at the time, and from December 2008 it asks women to contact Julie Dages about starting one. The evening study ran on a different cadence and changed material several times: in 2006 a video-based Beth Moore study, "Jesus the One and Only," filmed in Israel, Monday nights at 7pm from June 5, contact the church office; in spring 2008 Cynthia Heald's "Becoming a Woman of Prayer," Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30, April 9 to May 28; in December 2008 a new Kay Arthur 40-Minute Bible Study from Precepts Ministries, due to resume in January, contact Lisa Jacobson; and in the 2009 and 2011 captures Beth Moore's "Loving Well" series, Wednesday nights 7:00 to 8:30, contact again Lisa Jacobson.

What the record measures

Two measurements sit side by side here. First, continuity of format: a daytime and an evening slot, listed on the page from 2006 to 2011, with child care as a standing accommodation for the daytime group rather than a one-off. Second, turnover of material and leadership: the daytime side keeps the same Karssen listing while its group pauses, and the evening side moves from Moore to Heald to Arthur and back to Moore, shifting from Monday to Wednesday along the way. The named contact changes with it: Julie Dages for the daytime group throughout, the church office for the evening group in 2006 and spring 2008, Lisa Jacobson from December 2008. A program that keeps its slot but swaps its curriculum and its point of contact is a program that outlived any one leader's term, which is itself a finding.

The deviation

The page is thin by design: a title, a book, a day, a phone number, nothing on attendance, nothing on how many six-week cycles actually ran versus how many were announced and quietly skipped. "Please check back here for the next program" appears in more than one capture, the stock phrase of a page waiting on its own update, which the bench reads as a small, honest admission that the page sometimes ran ahead of the group's actual calendar.

Held against the classroom

This card belongs next to the ESOL card, not folded into it. The ESOL classroom card documented English instruction for the neighborhood and a precept-study library page; this card documents a members' Bible study with its own named curricula, by Gien Karssen, Beth Moore, Cynthia Heald and Kay Arthur, distinct from the general library shelf. Both used the church building on different days; neither is a duplicate of the other once the curriculum is named out.

Two names as the sturdiest fact on the page

Julie Dages and Lisa Jacobson are the page's most durable artifacts: names published across several captures, the same names-forward habit the directory card already measured elsewhere on this site. Julie Dages stands on every capture from 2006 to 2011 with a phone number beside her name; Lisa Jacobson appears from the December 2008 capture onward. A study that lists its contact by first and last name is a study run by someone willing to be called, not routed through a web form, and the evening group's move from "call the church office" to a named leader is a small sign of a volunteer taking the slot on.

What the switch in material says

Reading the evening curricula in order adds a third measurement to the two already taken. Four studies from three authors pass through one weekly slot in about three years: a filmed Beth Moore series, a Cynthia Heald book on prayer, a Kay Arthur 40-minute study, then a second Beth Moore series. The archive cannot say why the evening group changed material each time; it can say roughly when, because the 2006, May 2008, December 2008 and 2009 captures bracket each switch.

Verdict

Documented: two weekly studies, five named curricula from four authors across 2006 to 2011, two named points of contact, and a standing child-care accommodation for the daytime group. Not shown: attendance, how many announced cycles actually ran, or what happened to either study after the last capture. The room and the rhythm are certain; the headcount is not.
